Contra Mestra Meirelou began practicing Capoeira in 1992. After having her second child Contra Mestra Meirelou has now been teaching since 1997. Not only capable of teaching adults of all ages, Contra Mestra Meirelou has had continuing success teaching children’s classes as well as running workshops, courses, performing in festivals, TV shows and many other presentations. With her qualifications and experience, Meirelou has been developing her work with Capoeira, always pre-occupied with the physical, emotional and social development of the children. She also offers classes to the parents of those children who wish to participate in the activities, thus creating one more form of communication (physical expression)
Originally from Cuiaba, Brazil, Professor Perere has been practising capoeira since 1992 under the guidance of Mestre Sombra (Angola Brasilera) and Mestre Demetrius (Aruandê Capoeira). He has taught Capoeira in schools, community schemes, and social projects in Brazil. In 2005 he came to New Zealand and began teaching and promoting Capoeira for kids, youth and adults with the objective to encourage the practice of Capoeira as a cultural and musical expression, a physical discipline and a philosophy of life.
Olive (Teimosa) has practised Capoeira and afro-Brazilian dance throughout Brazil and New Zealand and has been part of the group Aruandê Capoeira since 2003. Olive taught Samba and Danca-Afro classes in Dunedin while completing a BA (Anthropology) and a Diploma in Portuguese. She also spent two years training and performing with Dance Lab, a dance research collective based at the University of Otago. Olive is currently undertaking post-graduate studies in anthropology at Victoria University, Wellington.
